WhatsApp could soon introduce a convenient way for Android users to read messages without opening a conversation or triggering blue ticks. The platform is reportedly developing an iOS-inspired chat preview feature that would let users view recent messages directly from the chat list while keeping read receipts unchanged.
For users who prefer checking messages discreetly, this could address a familiar limitation. Although notification previews offer a way to read incoming messages without opening a chat, they are less useful when notifications are dismissed or several messages arrive together.
How Will the New Chat Preview Feature Work?
According to findings in WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.26.44.12, the feature is being developed to let users long-press an individual conversation and open a floating preview window.
The window would display the latest messages from the selected chat without taking users into the conversation. Viewing messages through this preview is reportedly not expected to trigger blue ticks, allowing users to check their messages without sending a read receipt to the other person.
The preview may also support scrolling through older messages. This would give Android users more flexibility when catching up on a conversation, rather than limiting them to only the most recent messages.
How Is It Different From the Existing iPhone Feature?
A similar chat preview option is already available on WhatsApp for iPhone. Users can long-press a conversation in the chat list to bring up a pop-up window containing recent messages without opening the chat itself.
Android currently handles the same long-press action differently. It brings up a selection menu with options such as pin, archive, mute and delete.
The proposed feature would bring the two platforms closer in terms of functionality. However, the reported scrolling support could make the Android version more flexible than the existing iOS implementation, where preview scrolling is limited.
When Will Android Users Get the Feature?
The feature is still under development and was identified through a teardown of WhatsApp Android beta version 2.26.44.12. It is not currently available to public beta testers.
WhatsApp has not announced an official release date. As with other features discovered during beta development, its presence in the app’s code does not guarantee that it will reach the stable version.
If rolled out, the feature could offer Android users a more convenient way to manage conversations, particularly when they want to check a message before deciding whether to open the chat and respond. It would also reduce the need to rely on notification previews for discreet message checking.
