The French connection and Dutch Lemon

The French auto-company is all set to launch a  brand new SUV that not only appeals to people who prioritize comfort, safety, versatility, and some luxury too. The Citroen C5 Aircross is all new but already has at least three other competitors, the Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Kushaq, and the popular Jeep Compass. While Citroen is offering complimentary maintenance for five years/ 50,000km, while the offer is only valid till April 6. The French are famous for many reasons, but only time will tell whether Citroen can capture Indian hearts.

As per the manufacturer, the SUV will be assembled locally, as it can give the C5 an advantage of the cost reduction of the product. But currently, the C5 Aircross is offered only with a 2.0L diesel engine that is mated with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, that can churn 177PS of power and 400Nm of torque. The car offer’s a front-wheel-drive setup and also has a ground clearance of 230mm which is enough to tackle most of the country roads. While the suspension is phenomenal in providing a comfortable ride, the car doesn’t let you feel the bumps.

While the comfort in C5 Aircross is optimum the space inside the vehicle is equipped with big seats that offer more space, while the memory foam cushioning tends to make long journeys more comfortable. The Citroen is offering the C5 in two specs Feel and Shine, while Feel is the basic variant while the Shine is the topmost variant. Even though Shine is the top specification of the C5 it only offers three extra features, the LED headlamps, a Hands-free Tailgate, and a Panoramic Sunroof. While the other features in interiors are basically the same for both variants.

The Aircross will be available in two trims Feel and Shine with 4 color options and 3 dual-tone options. The Dual-beam LED headlamps (available on Shine), LED DRL’s with LED fog lamps, and LED tail lights. While the signature twin slat grille provides the vehicle with optimum airflow but also gives the car a unique look worthy for an SUV. The car also gets dual-tone 18inch alloys, and a dual chrome faux exhaust pipe on the rear. Well, not everything is new and best, as the infotainment system is an 8inch touchscreen that doesn’t have a home screen. The six speakers that come installed are also average. Whereas the 12.3inch digital instrument cluster looks fancy for the sharp graphics, but it doesn’t provide navigation.

While the car may lack minor features and there is some compromise, but what Citroen has not to compromise is in the safety. As both the top and basic trims get six airbags, traction control, and also a Blind spot detection system. The C5 also has a ‘Coffee Break’ warning that asks the driver to pullover if that person is driving over 65kmph for 2 hours straight. The front seats come with ventilation but only the driver side seat is automatic, while the passenger side seat uses a jog dial to recline.

Now let’s address the elephant in the room… So how much will the C5 Aircross cost? The car has only made an official debut, and the actual price can only be known then. But until the launch, the car is estimated to have a price range of between ₹25lakh – ₹30lakh. At this price tag, this car will impress many people and limited competition means there will be many takers C5. But only time can decide Citroen’s fate in India.
