Oh yes, there is a brand new car from the German auto-manufacturer Volkswagen. VW is a brand that has produced more cars than any other automobile manufacturer. VW is not only a well-established brand but a brand that also owns the most luxurious motor brands under its name, however, VW kept its focus on the simple vehicle for everyday use. Even though the brand has always prioritized the most affordable car models, and hence they export their cars in almost every country.
So it is going to be a new car, and it is an SUV. As SUVs in India are selling like hotcakes, it seems every automobile manufacturer is bringing in their designs. The VW-Taigun is not only a fresh entry in the most competitive segment, it also has a cousin who is sharing the design language, Skoda Kushaq. But Taigun will also be offered in the GT variant. Whereas Kushaq is only available in the mellow option.
VW-Taigun was revealed in 2020 auto-expo but many things have been changed, as the addition of chrome on the grill is a first from the auto-manufacturer. The font design not only gives the vehicle a bold presence, and with the addition of the chrome elements, the car looks muscular. While the car also appears to be lower than the current rivals. However, the expo-variant had 19inch alloys which are replaced with more practical 17inch alloy wheels. The GT variant also gets four GT badges the front grille, two others on each cheek, and finally one at the rear. However, the rear of the vehicle is going to be a head-turner.
As the tail light runs on the entire length connecting both lamps, with curved LED line. While the real light setup has retro-modern fusion the front LED DRL’s are not that appealing due to the staggered arrangement which doesn’t complement the rear setup.
Now about the GT element, a 1.5L four-cylinder turbocharged petrol mated with 7-speed DCT, while a 6-speed manual is being planned. The non GT will be available with 1.5 Tsi with 6-speed MT. While the GT manages to churn 150PS of peak power and 250Nm of peak torque. There is also another 1.L three-cylinder turbo option available in both 6speed in automatic and manual options.
However, the 1.5 Tsi heart has a cylinder deactivation option that can provide better fuel economy and a similar feature is available in Kushaq as both these cars share the platform. The five-seater GT gets ventilated seats like it’s rivals. Some touch of red in the interiors with the red ambient lighting not only complements each other but also increases the luxury feel. The Taigun also gets a fully digital instrumental cluster.
The Taigun might be missing some latest features however VW has equipped Taigun with electronic stability control (ESC), multiple-collision braking, and two airbags as standard safety features. However there are options for 6airbags, Hill start/hold, ISOFIX and tyre deflation warning for additional safety features. Volkswagen will launch Taigun in the end of July and with 95% localization, the car will have a very competitive price. Which can be expected in between ₹9.5L- 18.0L (ex-showroom). If VW manages to keep a competitive edge over rivals, as well as might be able to appeal to Polo GT owners who might feel the necessity to upgrade.
