Back in 2016, ’Drishyam’ (Malayalam) had blown my mind, with its stunning screenplay and story. An ordinary man caught up in extraordinary circumstances, trying to get away with murder, does he succeed? He does, but for how long? So when I got to know that a sequel was being released to the 2013 thriller, the thought very obviously occurred to me that it won’t be as great as the original movie, but these thoughts only lasted till I decided to catch up with the sequel.
The story takes up 6 years later, from where ‘Drishyam’ left. Georgekutty (Mohanlal), is now an established businessman who owns his own theatre and has taken his love for films to another level by hiring a scriptwriter for a story he has been thinking about for a long time, Rani (Meena) has found a new friend in the neighborhood to share her fears with, Anju (Anshiba) has not yet recovered from the trauma and crosses paths with panic attacks upon seeing police cars and hearing sirens, while Anu (Eshter Anil) lives in a hostel.
The family is happy now and has almost overcome their fears, with every character getting a little isolated from the other. Soon they realize that the police are still hell-bent on finding the dead body, that can be the only evidence to proove Georgekutty as a criminal. Mohanlal is as amazing as he is, he breathes life into the character of Georgekutty. The first half of the movie might feel a little slow and slogged, introducing unnecessary characters who seem to lead the plot almost nowhere, but have patience till the screenplay takes up the pace in the second half, as the twists and the turns start punching their ways into the screen, one after the other.
At some points in the film you might feel that Jeethu Joseph, the director of the film has tried to force, bringing the pieces of the puzzle together, but by the end when he explains the existence of every character, and their moves, it might as well shock you and you might question yourself, what might have Georgekutty done with a little bit more education? There are several shots, shot that frame Georgekutty from outside window bars that give a sense of him being a prisoner even though he is free.
The main question is, is Georgekutty able to pull off another trick again, and save his family from the clutches of the law? Well, ’Drishyam 2’ is a must-watch.
