Morning After Pills: All You Need to Know About Emergency Contraception

-

If you’re not aware of what a Morning after pill is, it is a type of emergency contraceptive method that can prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.

The most effective and acknowledged birth control method is using condoms, but if this form of protection fails or you make a mistake, you can opt for a plan B or emergency contraception.

What is Emergency Contraception?

This regular oral contraceptive pill contains a higher dosage of Oestrogen, Progestin, or both of the hormones that prevent ovulation (release of an egg) during the menstrual cycle and makes the vaginal fluid thicker, thus preventing the sperm from reaching the egg. Unwanted-72 or I-Pill, Preventol are some available brands in India.

This birth control medication can be used within 72 hours of unprotected sex or failure of condoms, but won’t be effective if you’re already pregnant.

How to take the pill

First, read all the directions carefully if you get the over-the-counter product by yourself or consult a healthcare provider.

  • Take one tablet by mouth as soon as possible after unprotected sex. Keep in mind, it’s just a protective method for emergency purposes only, not for regular usage.
  • The pill should be taken within 72 hours in order for it to work successfully. The longer you wait, the failure rate becomes higher.

If you feel nausea or vomit within 2 hours after taking the medication, consult a doctor for re-dosage.

Side effects

Some common side effects may include:

  • Nausea or urges to vomit
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Irregular bleeding or late periods or spotting
  • Breast tenderness

These side effects are usually minor as emergency contraceptives are usually safe for the general population, they subside within some days.

Keep in mind, though emergency contraceptives like the morning after pill have higher success rates in preventing pregnancy, there is a rare chance of failure. They also don’t provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, Chlamydia, and more.

If your pregnancy result comes back positive, you can seek advice from a doctor for all information regarding prenatal care. If it is an unwanted pregnancy, you can choose to terminate it with a different type of abortion method available.
