According to a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE was found to have the ability to neutralize a new variant of Covid-19 which was spreading at a rapid rate in Brazil.
The virus that had similar mutations as contained with the highly contagious P.1 variant first identified in Brazil was neutralized by the blood taken from people who were given the vaccine, said a study conducted by scientists from the companies and the University of Texas Medical Branch found.
The main and primary target of many Covid-19 vaccines is the spike used by the virus to enter human cells. According to studies published, previously, other more contagious variants first identified in the United Kingdom and South Africa were neutralized by Pfizer’s vaccine.
According to reports, Pfizer’s current vaccine is highly capable of protecting against the South African variant. However, the drugmaker is planning to test a third booster dose of their vaccine, in order to better understand the immune response.
