The emerging usage of social media has provoked many kinds of issues such as body image concerns, including body dissatisfaction and self-objectification. Mostly prevalent among women. Editing an original picture to an idealized version of yourself is okay but some people have taken it to a whole new level altogether.
Some people edit their pictures to such an extent that it creates an image into people’s mind that that is so far from reality that they can sow seeds of doubt in some people’s minds, leading them to strive for unrealistic body image at great cost to their self-esteem and mental health.
There was this challenge that was recently trending over Instagram and still some people do it to convey body positivity to their viewers. The post would contain two pictures of the same person side to side, one an idealized depiction and the other a more natural depiction, trying to bring about a change in people’s thought process.
Thankfully these people try their best to uncover the fake means that go on behind the scenes of these infamous Instagram posts and thus discourage women to stop comparing themselves with these not-so-real idealistic and images.
The negative aspects of social media are far different from that of traditional media. Instagram is one of the platforms which is solely used for posting and sharing photos which is most popular among young adults 18-30 years of age. It has generally been attributed to the process of social comparison.
