“Man’s Best Friend”, there’s a reason behind this common phrase is associated with Dogs, referring to their millennia-long history of friendship, love, loyalty, and companionship with humans. We learn so many lessons from a dog’s personality, appearance, adaptability, and strength, and most importantly, their willingness to protect and unconditionally love their family members till their very last breath.
During this quarantine, many pet parents have admitted that their pets are losing appetite and seem to have grown lethargic. Lack of physical activity affects a dog’s metabolism, leading to loss of appetite and a weak immunity system. Therefore, here are some recommendations on how to take care of your four-legged friend:
Visits to the Vet
Plan periodic visits to the veterinarian for schedule-wise vaccination process to avoid harmful diseases. Make sure you keep an eye on your dog for any unusual behavior as he cannot tell you if he is feeling sick.
Spaying female dogs reduce their discomfort during heat periods, also lowers the risk of uterine cancer.
Neutering male dogs prevent testicular cancer and lessen the risk of prostate disease in them.
A Healthy Balanced Diet
By feeding your dogs commercial pet foods, you are endangering their health. Opt for healthy home alternatives, a balanced diet including meat instead of cheap supermarket pet foods. Follow the dietary recommendations made by your vet according to your dog’s age, weight, level of activity, and breed.
Lastly, feed your dogs before you eat to keep them from begging at the dinner table and always have clean water available for them as well.
Grooming and Training
If your dog is long-coated and a shedder, they might develop matts and ice balls in their hair if not taken care of properly. Never overlook grooming, give a weekly bath if approved, and ensure your dog is on anti-flea treatment if you see possible hints of ticks. Trim his nails frequently to avoid unnecessary pain or breaking while your dog takes a walk.
Train your dogs to follow simple commands. Interactive training with clarity and consistency gives your dog a better understanding of your world and provides him freedom. The better he is at following basic and necessary commands, the better he will be at survival for long and safe life.
