Internet memes were first discovered by millennials, the ones who are born from 1981 to 1996, and Generation Z (Gen Z) has taken it to a whole new level. Since then it has become a constant source of entertainment and several meme pages have popped up. It is true that memes have undoubtedly become a part of our lives. It gives us that slight amount of mood upliftment in chaos when we need it. It also keeps us up to date about whatever is happening around the world, helps us have a good laugh at times, more importantly, connects us to a larger internet community.
Memes do help us make the most out of a situation but it does sometimes blur the lines between what is right and what is wrong. The person who is actually creating the meme with pictures to mock or normalize any popular event is giving their point of view as well, to which the audience reacts.
Sometimes it does cross the line. Vulgar internet memes in the name of dark humor are passed on from person to person. Most teenagers circulate memes as a means of conversation. It takes seconds for news to break, the next moment the internet memes are being shared by everyone. Memes are popular overall social media platforms, be it Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, or Reddit.
Maybe Gen Z uses Internet Memes as a weapon to cope up with the unforeseen circumstances around them. They are using the best tool they know which is technology to lighten the weight of existential angst with a little cheerfulness.
