Van Gogh Is considered as one of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists. The striking colour, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms of his work powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art. Van Gogh’s art became popular after his death, especially in the late 20th century, when his work sold for record-breaking sums at auctions around the world and was featured in blockbuster touring exhibitions.
- Vincent Van Gogh, who has inspired many artists in the 20th and 21st century has a museum to his name with all his paintings and letters in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Van Gogh who never got recognition while he was still alive, today invites around two million people every day to his museum.
- Have you ever thought how this world would have been a less artsy place without “The Starry Night” and “Sunflowers”? Van Gogh had initially decided to be a pastor and work as a lay preacher in Borinage, Belgium. He only took to painting after being sacked from his job.
- Van Gogh painted for 10 years, from the age of 27 to his early demise when he was 37. In this span of time, he produced more than 900 paintings which brings it down to almost a new painting every 36 hours!
- Besides creating artworks Van Gogh also wrote letters and postcards. These postcards as well as letters often included the rough drafts of his famous masterpieces.
- When Van Gogh painted, “The Starry Night”, he didn’t think of it as a good painting. In fact, in his 10-year span of being an artist, he never considered himself as a good painter or his paintings to be any good, and it is rumoured he sold just one painting in his lifetime. They say that legends aren’t quite aware of their calibres if only we could take a time machine, and travel back in time to show him what his artworks would mean to every artist in the 21st
- Van Gogh cut off his own ear in 1888, following an argument with fellow painter, Paul Gaugin in the Yellow House at Aries.
- Van Gogh was suffering from a mental illness, which is why he admitted himself to the Saint-Remy and spent almost a year over there. On 27th July 1890 he shot himself in the chest in a wheat field where he was believed to be painting, he, somehow walked himself back to his residence and was treated by the doctors, but passed away after a couple of days as a result of infection.
- According to Van Gogh’s brother Theo, Van Gogh’s last words were, “La tristesse durera toujours”, which meant, the sadness will last forever.
