The word ‘momo’ itself has always and will make you drool over it every now and then. It has created a great buzz among every age group especially in the youth, the ultimate go-to food for any mood.
History of MOMO
In Newari, one of Nepal’s oldest languages, ‘momo’ means cooking by steaming. ‘Momo’ is to Nepal what pizza is to Italy, and is available in every corner of the street, restaurant, hotel, and household of Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal. Momo is like Mount Everest – one of the symbols of Nepal.
Now its popularity has spread beyond national boundaries and, thanks largely to Nepalese communities living abroad, it is growing popular in other parts of the world, too. The history of momo in Nepal dates back to as early as the fourteenth century. Momo was initially a Newari food in the Katmandu valley. It was later introduced to Tibet, China, and as far away as Japan by a Nepalese princess who was married to a Tibetan king in the late fifteenth century.
What makes it popular?
In Kolkata, momos have become a kind of a staple for all, and with growing demand especially in the youth momo joints are in every corner of the City and the most famous one which is ruling in the town is none other than ‘Wow Momo’. The craving for momos made it extremely popular and moreover because it is cheap, the price of momo varies from 20-30 rupees for one plate (5-7 pieces) with an amazing light chicken soup.
A plate of momo is enough for a light lunch, snacks, etc. Then comes the tempting taste. Momo is prepared with special spices, which add a unique and original taste of Nepal to suit everyone’s palate. The other reason is momo’s long history. Momo has figured on Nepalese menus for centuries and it has become part of the national culture. The most important thing is its availability. Not only ‘Wow Momo’, but there is also ‘Momo I am’ and many more along with stalls on every corner. The best part about Momos is they are healthy and yet tasty with pocket-friendly to satiate any student on a winter evening standing on the bus stand and having mouth-watering momos with unlimited soup. What else one can ask for, right?
