Kolkata International Film Festival starts today amidst coronavirus fear

26th Kolkata International Film Festival completed its opening ceremony on 8th of January, 2021. For the first time the ceremony got inaugurated virtually and Shahrukh Khan also attended the opening ceremony virtually.

Coronavirus has led to events going virtually and digitally. KIFF is known for its selection of films from different parts of the world. This year due to covid-19, the selection committee didn’t compromised on the selection of films. A total of 81 feature films and 50 short films will be screened this year. A total of 8 venues will be screening the selected movies from 9th January to 15th January, 2021. The festival will be announced by screening ‘Apur Sansar’. This is going to be a special tribute to Soumitra Chatterjee, who died earlier in 2020 due to post Covid-19 Complications.

Normally the festival is celebrated during the end of every year but due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the festival got shifted to January 2021. Keeping in mind the covid protocols, the festival committee decided to fill in the registration process for the delegate and media cards online. Those who couldn’t get the cards can book tickets online. “The show must go on” is the tagline for this years KIFF.

The 26th Kolkata International Film Festival is known for screening world acclaimed movies every year. This year from the world cinema category, the most critically acclaimed being the ‘Laila in Haifa’ directed by Amos Gitai. The film is already in talks among the cinephiles. Other critically acclaimed films like ‘Miss Marx’, ‘Nadia Butterfly’ etc. The choice of films for this year already indicates that women struggle is going to be highlighted this year.

There are going to be special tributes this year. Apart rom Soumitra Chatterjee, actors like Amala Sankar, Basu Chatterjee, Santu Mukhopadhyay, Tapas Pal, Irfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, Kim Ki-Duk and Fernando Solanas.

Throughout the city lots of posters have been placed by showing our favorite movie stars wearing masks to make us cautious about the fact that the pandemic is still not gone.
