Our Bollywood romances usually involved dancing in the rain, followed by the typical ‘two lovers meeting each other after a long crime-fighting climax’ format. Talking about today’s generation, films and scripts have changed a lot and we are finally seeing films that speak about love stories, which can be related. Here are the 7 beautiful stories about love, that Bollywood gifted us with to cherish for a lifetime.
Photograph: This movie does not try hard to be beautiful, because it already is. Miloni (Sanya Malhotra) and Rafi (Nawazudin Siddiqui) bring an uncertain mixture of rawness and subtlety to the screen and the movie. The beauty of ‘Photograph’ lies in the fact that it narrates a very simple, been there, story in an extraordinary way. The film, directed by Ritesh Batra feels like the brush of a gentle, warm wind on a chilly winter afternoon.
Raincoat: Raincoat is Rituparno Ghosh’s adaption of O’ Henry’s, ‘Gift of Magi’. Almost every frame of this film looks like a canvas. Manoj (Ajay Devgan) decides to see his former fiancée, Neerja (AishwaryaRaiBachchan) and discovers terrible secrets about her life, both hide their problems from each other, but ultimately end up fulfilling each other’s needs with the love, all that was left in their hearts, for each other.
October: Shiuli (Banita Sandhu), the female protagonist is compared to the flower of the same name, that has a very short life, but its fragrance lingers for a much longer time. Shoojit Sircar’s, ‘October’ is somewhat similar, its fragrance will linger with you for a long time. The beauty of ‘October’ is, it never tries to define the relationship between its leads, it can be love, it can be just an act of humanity, ‘October’ leaves that upon its audiences. The film doesn’t shout out love, but yet one is bound to feel a nuanced streak of the bond of love that, Dan and Shiuli share.
Lootera: This movie is Vikramaditya Motwane’s adaptation of O’ Henry’s, ‘The last leaf’. O’ Henry’s stories are beautiful and almost each of them has this heartwrenching twist at the end, and Bollywood has adapted two of them with care and beauty. ‘Lootera’, the title of the film speaks for itself and the impact it has had on people, a lot of hearts, through empty canvases waiting to receive a masterpiece. The story is made up of a few stolen glances, ounces of guilt, strokes of a brush, and a silent longing for love.
Lunchbox: This is RiteshBatra’s second film on this list. ‘Lunchbox’, is about letters, not of love, but things, we might forget if we don’t have someone to tell them to. Illa (Nimrat Kaur) and Saajan (Irfan Khan) are just two lonely people looking for love, for companionship, they find it in each through a mishap in delivery of lunch boxes, as they start sharing daily details from their days and we wonder what is it, if not habits and what are habits, if not love. But fate never brings Illa and Sajaanto the right train, but you never know, sometimes the wrong train will take you to the right station.
Sir: Rohena Gera’s Sir has a tagline which says, “Is love enough?” when the film comes to an end, it will leave you with the same question, and a little lump in your throat. It’s the long silences amidst the huge cityscapes. It’s the intimacy, that love often is, the dreams and wishes of an individual, both rich and poor, lost among the crowd of the city and its tall buildings. Sir is beautiful, it will make you feel, it will leave you with a feeling that even though love is more than enough sometimes, it will still fall short of enough, somewhere.
