Who should and shouldn’t fast on Saraswati Pujo

-

Tomorrow is Saraswati Pujo. While the auspicious worship of Devi Saraswati is followed by a grand feast, it is preceded by the ritual of fasting. Doctor Joydeep Ghosh, Consultant Internal Medicine at Fortis Hospital Anandapur, explains that though religious sentiments are important, taking care of one’s health is always a priority.

Dr Ghosh specifically points out who should and should not fast. He said, “The advantage of keeping a fast on Saraswati Pujo is that the rituals get over pretty early in the morning after which people can enjoy a scrumptious meal. It is always preferred that people don’t fast, however, young students and people without chronic health complications can fast.”

So who should not fast?

  1. People with high blood pressure who need to take their medicines early morning should avoid fasting.
  2. Mildly diabetic patients can make an exception for one day. However, those who suffer from chronic diabetes and depend on insulin, for them fasting is a strict no-no.
  3. People who have been advised by doctors to stay constantly hydrated due to their medical records, should not fast.
  4. During this season we have had a lot of patients complaining about stomach troubles.  It is of utmost importance that these people stay hydrated and consume ORS.
  5. Senior citizens and children should not fast.
  6. If you suffer from any kind of gastric problems, fasting is not an ideal ritual.
