St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous) Kolkata: Press Conference on 8 January 2019 by Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Dominic Savio, SJ, Principal

  1. Convocation, Valedictory & Nihil Ultra Award: The 12th Convocation and Valedictory of St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous) Kolkata will be held on 16 January 2019, which is the 159th Foundation Day of the Institution. Prof. Suranjan Das, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Jadavpur University will be the Chief Guest. He will also be awarded with the most prestigious Nihil Ultra Award for his contribution in Higher Education in Bengal in general and for his support and patronage to St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous) Kolkata in particular. The Nihil Ultra Award is the highest Award given by St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous) Kolkata to a person in recognition of his/her contribution to the overall growth of the College.
  • Xavotsav-2019: It is one of the biggest Inter College Festivals, where students from almost 50 colleges from different parts of the country and abroad participate. It will take place on 22 to 24 January 2019 at the College. 
  • Beyond Barriers-19: It is the biggest Musical Fund Raising Extravaganza organized every year by the St. Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni Association. The 19th episode of this will be held on 26 January 2019 evening at the College grounds. This year’s Artists are Armaan Malik and Neha Kakkar from Mumbai.
  • Bhasha Divas: The International Mother Language Day is observed in a grand manner by the College. The programme known as “SANYOG”, organized by the St. Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni Association begins with the lighting of the torch at the foot of the Martyrs Column in Dhaka University by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the Dhaka University and the flame moves to various Universities in Bangladesh. After it comes to Indian territory it goes to different Jesuit University and Colleges in different parts of the state. It culminates on the International Mother Language Day (21st Febuarary) with a procession from the College Hostel at AJC Bose Road to the College campus, where the staff, students and Alumni/ae participate. The torch is received by the Father Principal at the College and placed in front of a specially erected Martyrs’ Column.
  • St. Xavier’s College Kolkata to start New PG Courses in 10 more Subjects in the Park Street Campus in next 2 years: As a part of its Expansion Programme, the College is going to begin M.A. Courses in the following subjects from the Academic year 2019 – M.A. in English, Political Sc., Bengali in Raghabpur Campus and M. Ed, if possible. In academic year 2020 & 2021 M.A. in Sociology, History, M.Sc in Chemistry, Statistics/ Data Science, Economics will be started. While Ph. D programmes are already on in Physics, Commerce, Micro Biology, Bio Technology, Environmental Science, Ph. D programme will commence in Computer Science from the Academic year 2019. For all the PG courses available in the college, there are plans to start Ph. D programmes after 2 years. Also, there are plans to open B.Sc.(Hons) Course in Psychology from 2020 Academic year.
  • New State of the Art Finance Laboratory: The new Finance Laboratory, first of its kind in any college in the country, will be set up in the College. It is a Research Laboratory for the students with Finance specialization. It can also be of much use by the faculties and researchers in the areas of Accounting & Finance. It will have all the major data base on finance and economics. Data bases like Prowess, Capital Line, India Stat, Bloomberg, etc, are already available in the new Finance lab. This will also help in training in Statistics, Operational Research and allied areas.
  • Students Can Access Online Library Materials in their Own Gadgets: The College Library is now a state of the art resource centre for higher education and research and has become tech savvy. The students can now access online Library materials either in their smartphone or tablet or in laptop from anywhere in the campus. However, awards have already been instituted for the students, who spend maximum time in the College Library.
  • Anti-Plagiarism Software in the College: College has already installed Anti-Plagiarism software to check unauthorized copying in the dissertations, researches and other areas. This has no doubt enhanced the quality of work in the institution.
  • Consultancy and Career Oriented Courses: The College has taken an initiative to extend consultancy to the industries and other organizations, who need such facility. Projects of several Central and State Govts. and their agencies  and reputed Industrial Organisations are undertaken by the expert faculty members of the College, which is further encouraged as a part of the Extension programme of the College.
  1. Raghabpur Campus: The expansion programme is continuously going on in the Rural campus of the College at Raghabpur, 24-Parganas (South). The second academic building will be set up to cater to greater number of rural students. M.A. Course in Bengali is going to commence here from the coming academic year-2019. Students of this campus are especially groomed in Soft Skills, especially in Spoken English. Career Counseling advises are also organised not only for the students but also for their parents so that the students can choose the career properly. A visible change has taken place in around the area after the campus has come. 
  1. Foreign Exchange: The College has MOU with 11 foreign universities in Belgium, Netherlands, Australia, Africa, and mutual Credit Exchange facilities are available with them.
  1. Scholarship: The College has various scholarship schemes for students on need cum merit basis, which includes waiver of Tuition Fees and Hostel Charges, etc, where around Rs. One Crore is disbursed to the students. No students go back from the College due to financial inability after selected for admission.
  1. St. Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni Association to open New Chapters: two new chapters of the SXCCAA are being opened shortly, one will be in North Bengal, and the other will be in South Africa. SXCCAA has completed its third successful National Convention in Delhi.
  1. EMMRC: The Kolkata centre of the Electronic Multimedia Research Centre managed by the Consortium for Educational Communication under the UGC is the only one in the country to be run by a college and it is St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, which runs the centre. EMMRC, Kolkata has produced several programmes under the MOOCS (Massive Online Open Courses) programme, where students will get online video lecture, transcription, academic script, bibliography, FAQs, Quiz, etc., on the topic.
