The 51st Dadasaheb Phalke Award will be given to actor Rajinikanth for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, it was announced on Thursday. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar confirmed the news. The Directorate of Film Festivals of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of the Government of India presents it every year at the National Film Awards.
The jury comprised of Asha Bhosle, Mohanlal, Biswajit Chatterjee, Shankar Mahadevan, and Subhash Ghai made the decision. Rajinikanth will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Indian cinema’s highest honor, for the year 2019 on May 3, along with the National Film Awards. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to Twitter to congratulate Rajinikanth.
Rajinikanth first appeared in the Tamil film ‘Apoorva Raagangal’ in 1975. He has produced blockbusters such as ‘Thalapathi,’ ‘Billa,’ ‘Muthu,’ ‘Baasha,’ ‘Sivaji,’ and ‘Enthiran.’ He’s also appeared in Hindi films including “Hum,” “Andha Kanoon,” “Bhagwaan Dada,” “Aatank Hi Aatank,” and “Chaalbaaz.”
He has also appeared in films in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Bengali. Rajinikanth received the Padma Bhushan award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan award in 2016. The National Film Awards named the most prestigious and coveted award in Indian cinema after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, the “Father of Indian Cinema”. A Swarna Kamal, a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh, a certificate, a silk scroll, and a shawl are all part of the prize.
