Maruti Suzuki is the brand every Indian is familiar with, however, the automobile manufacturer is also popular due to the competitive price of products and spares. Well, we don’t have to give any formal introduction to the brand as it is native. So let’s address the elephant in the room, or it will be appropriate to say the crossovers Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Maruti Suzuki S Presso. The main reason for the comparison between these two vehicles is due to the fact that they serve a similar purpose.
Well before going into the specifications and it is important to note that the only mechanical difference is due to the different sized engines, while the other difference is due to the design language on the body making them distinct. While Ignis was first launched in India in January 2017 but the car recently received a facelift in 2020 whereas S Presso came in September 2019. So it is safe to say that they are new and young. Both the cars have Front Wheel drive yet they have a distinct personality. As one car intends to be more practical while the other offers more premium features.
The S Presso and Ignis use the Front-wheel drive but the first one offers the package with a 998cc three-cylinder heart that can crank 67bhp @ 5,500rpm and a peak torque of 90Nm @ 3,500rpm. Meanwhile, Ignis comes with a 1,197cc four-cylinder heart that can produce 81.80bhp @ 6,000rpm and a peak torque of 113Nm @4,200rpm, thus the price and power difference.
As S Presso is targeted towards people who will use the car more often within the city and suburbs, whereas Ignis can take on the highways for a longer time, due to the VVT which provides quick power delivery and better response from the engine. Both these cars are five-seater, but Ignis is bigger and hence it offers more interior space, but SPresso beats the sibling by a bigger 10L capacity boot of 270L and both have a ground clearance of 180mm.
The visual difference is the only difference and except the minor details in the interiors and lastly the engine what makes them a bit different. As it is known that smaller displacement is more fuel-efficient as S Presso gives 31.2km Ignise can manage 20.89km/L respectively.
But there are some issues, as S Presso only comes equipped with a driver-side airbag whereas in Ignis there are two airbags on the front even in the basic variant. While both the vehicle using a front disc and drum combo that comes with ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).
As a bigger engine requires more fuel hence Ignis has a 32L fuel tank while S Presso has a 27L tank. While the S Presso also missed out on the power windows which are only offered with the topmost variant but the rear seats are foldable, which further increases the boot area for both cars. Due to their similar size, the turn radius for both the vehicles is very similar 4.5m and 4.7m while the later being Ignis.
The S Presso range starts at ₹ 3.7-5.19 lakh (ex-showroom) and Ignis at ₹4.89-7.31 lakh (ex-showroom). But real confusion begins with the variants, as S Presso has 7 and Ignis has 10 variants to choose from. With every upper variant the price increase rapidly, while minor updates are given to the overall appearance but the custom paint option is something that gives the vehicle a unique personality.
Maruti Suzuki is a company that has become one of the most popular brands in the country due to their innovation and trust that people have in the brand, and in recent times the automobile manufacturer has bigger plans. As they have plans to launch 15 new vehicles within 5 years. Hence we can expect more new rivals in various new categories or we can see some new faces in already established landmarks. As the auto market in India is ever-expanding thus automobile manufacturers do not wish to leave any stone unturned, as there is always a new scope. So we can expect a war between automobile manufacturers in India for the next five years.
