K-dramas have already become a thing around the world. With Bong Jon Hoo winning an Oscar for Parasite last year has brought a particular exposure to Korean cinema. So here are some top Korean movies you can catch up with:
The Wailing: A South Korean horror film directed by Na Hong-jin stars Kwak Do-Won, Hwang Jun-Min, Chun Woo-hee in lead roles. Upon the arrival of a stranger in a village a mysterious illness starts spreading, follows by a series of deaths. A police officer investigates them eventually getting his own family involved in the series of events.
The Handmaiden: ‘The Handmaiden’ is a South Korean erotic psychological drama directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri, Ha Jung-woo in lead roles. A woman is hired to be the handmaiden but has secretly been involved to defraud her.
Train to Busan: Directed by Yeong San-Ho, ‘Train to Busan’ is hailed as one of the best zombie movies of all time, because when was the last time you cried watching a movie on zombies. When a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.
Memories of Murder: Written and directed by Bong Jon Hoo, the film is loosely based on the true events of Korea’s first serial murders in history, which took place between 1986 and 1991 in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.
The Host: Much before bringing movies like Parasite, Memories of Murder into the world Bong Jon Hoo made ‘The Host’ in 2006. The movie explores similar themes as in Parasite. Park Gang-du’s daughter is abducted and eaten by a monster living in a nearby Han River. The movie had a political under commentary much like Bong Jon Hoo’s other films.
I Saw The Devil: Directed by Kim Jee-Woon and written by Park Hoon-Jung. Starring Lee bung-hun and Choi Min-Sik, the film follows NIS agent Kim Soo-Hyun (Lee), who embarks on a quest for revenge when his fiancée is brutally murdered by the psychopathic serial killer Jang Kyung-Chul (Choi).
