Kerala’ ‘Black Sand’ qualifies for Oscars 2021

-

It is a proud moment for India, after ‘Bittu’ getting shortlisted for Oscars 2021, Kerala’s documentary, ‘Black Sand’, directed by Sohan Roy, a UAE based marine professional and produced by AbhiniSohan Roy under the banner of Aries telecasting Pvt. Ltd has made its way into the Documentary Short Category section.

‘Black Sand’ is among the 114 movies that got selected under this category. The film holds up to the screen, the horrors and the irreparable and irrevocable effects caused by sand mining at Alappad in Kollam district Kerala. The film documents the amount of destruction that mining has brought to the lands and homes of the inhabitants. According to reports, the documentary also has an official selection at the Rajasthan International Film Festival 2021.

Earlier Lijo Jose Pellissery’s film, ’Jallikattu’ was selected as India’s official entry to Oscars, competing under the Best International Feature Film category, but currently, it is out of the Oscars race, while SudhaKongra’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’ is still in the competition. The latest addition with ‘Black Sand’ is Karishma Dev Dube’s ‘Bittu’ presented by Indian Women Rising (IWR), a cinema collective group formed by Ruchika Kapoor, Guneet Monga, Ekta Kapoor, and Tahira Kashyap Khurrana.

These films still have a long way to go to make it to the final nominations of Oscar 2021 that will be announced in March 2015. Let’s hope for the best and watch out for the Oscars 2021 that will be held on April 25, Sunday aired live on ABC.
