Alia Bhatt looks fierce in the new ‘Gangubai Kathiwadi’ teaser

-

The ‘Gangubai Kathiwadi’ teaser dropped in yesterday on the occasion of the director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 58th birthday. The teaser that is all-things-grandeurs shows Alia Bhatt in a never-seen-before avatar of the queen of Kamathipura. The film is based on a book,” Mafia Queens of Mumbai” written by S.Hussain Zaidi.

The film depicts the journey of Gangubai Kothewali, the Mafia Queen of Kamathipura, who was forced to accept circumstances at a young age and instead turned everything in her favour. Alia Bhatt has, donned the persona, dialogue delivery and embodied the character with perfection and power in the teaser, but somewhere her physical appearance falls short. The teaser has an extravagant color palette and almost every shot looks like a painting done with grandeur, and surely these are Bhansali’s USP. The background score enhances the character of Gangu and imparts more power to it. This film is Bhansali’s 10th directorial venture and promises a power-packed story along with great performances and music.

After the teaser was dropped in yesterday it garnered praises from many Bollywood biggies. Shah Rukh Khan tweeted saying,” I always look forward to your work as an actor ‘little one’. And this one seems extremely special….and you….so Gangsta!!! All my love and wishes for the film”.  Priyanka Chopra tweeted ”Alia!!!! I’m so proud of you my friend for stepping into complexity fearlessly. I hope you always keep shining. Presenting- Gangubai Kathiawadi! Congratulations Sanjay sir and team”.

The film was slated to release last year, but due to the pandemic, the shooting got stalled. The makers of the film landed themselves in legal trouble in December last year, when Babuji Rawji Shah who claimed to be Gangubai’s adopted son filed a suit against Bhansali claiming that the Zaidi’s book portrayed his mother in the wrong lights. However, judgments were passed on Bhansali’s behalf because the book was released in 2012 and the lawsuit was filed nin years later.

The film also stars Ajay Devgan, Huma Qureshi, and Emraan Hashmi and is slated to hit theatres on 30th July 2021 and reportedly to clash with Prabhas starrer, ‘Radhe Shyam’.
