Whatsapp, which uses Signal’s encryption technology, informed recently, asking users to let Facebook Inc and its subsidiaries to collect user data, which includes their phone number and location.Twitter got flooded with people criticizing Whatsapp and Facebook for their new policy. Some privacy activists questioned with “accept our data grab or get out” tweet and suggested users to switch to apps like Signal and Telegram.
The popularity of Signal app shot up further after it got endorsed by Elon Musk, who has one of the most-followed accounts on Twitter. More than 10,000 users installed the Signal app across the app store and play store after users came to know about the new policy. Telegram on the other hand picked up nearly 2.2 million downloads, according to data analytics firm Sensor Tower.
New Whatsapp installation fell by 11 percent in the first seven days of 2021 compared with the prior week, but that was still an estimated amount of 10.5 million downloads globally, Sensor Tower said.
World’s richest person Elon Musk is asking people to switch to Signal app over Whatsapp. Signal app does not share its users data on any other social media platform. Signal app has been trending more for businessmen, journalists due to its secure privacy policy.
