Kolkata: Every year the city starts with the excitement to enjoy their favorite and biggest annual book fair during winter. Attracting about 2 million people for a span of 10 days, it is the biggest book fair in the world.
Due to coronavirus this time around the city is going to miss the annual book fair. During the extended meeting of the Executive Committee of the guild held on January 6, the members decided that due to the increasing rate of covid-19, the 45th International Kolkata Book Fair of this year be deferred.
All the publishers and the booksellers guild said on a statement during the extended meeting of January 6, “The revised date will be intimated as soon as the situation improves.”
Tridib Chatterjee, guild president told The Hindu, “We are determined to organize the event this year only, maybe after June if the situation improves and international flights resume. It is after all, the largest attended book fair in the world. Last year the footfall was 2.2 million and it saw direct sales, from business to customers, of R.s 24 crore”
This year Bangladesh was to be the theme of the event, as because 2021 marks 50 years of the Nation’s Independence. Bangladeshi handicrafts, shops selling sarees, attracts a lot of crowds on any events.
Various political ideologies gets a chance to sell their books on that event. Now its all we can do is wait for covid to leave the globe and we can enjoy our favorite events like we used to do.
