Mis-en-scene is every object that constitutes the making of a scene, the costume, make-up, lighting, camera angle, music, props, and physical space.
Tamasha’s, “Agar Tum Saath Ho” became a heartbreak anthem just after its release. Deepika Padukone’s Tara and Ranbir Kapoor’s Vedstruggling to let go of each other amidst the dark shades of the café, with A.R Rahman’s tunes playing in the background struck a chord with almost every heart. Here are 7 factors that impact the intensity to the mis-en-scene of the song :
Blocking: Blocking is the physical space that an actor occupies in front of the camera, the position in which the actor will be placed in front of the camera. In “Agar Tum Saath Ho”, in the scene where they both lay their heads on the table, Ved looks away while Tara leans in longing for him to look back.
Color: The color palette of a scene is an important element in determining the mood of the scene. In the song, the predominance of shades of red suggests anger, love, rejection, passion, and desire.
Lighting: Lighting in a scene gives a sense of meaning to it, setting the atmosphere and the mood. In the song, low-key lighting has been used that allows shadows and depth and brings out the emotional intensity of the film.
Shot Size and Framing: A medium two-shot shows a world that belongs to only these two characters.
Set Design and Props: Props are a part of very important actions. The table in the scene acts as an important metaphor where Ved rests his head, followed by Tara who is trying to reach out to him.
Camera Angle: Camera angles help in describing the situation. A top angle exploits the vulnerability of the characters and their helplessness in this situation.
Costumes: Costumes help to describe individual moods better. In “Agar Tum Saath Ho”, the huge contrast between Ved and Tara’s costumes is a symbolization of the emotional distance that has come between them.
