SHAKUNTALA DEVI – Film Review

-

Released on 31st July 2020, premiered on  Amazon Prime, The biopic, ‘Shakuntala Devi’  has grabbed some major attention of the audience just by giving us a little sneak peek beforehand from its teaser. This movie is the celebration of the Great Indian Mathematician Late Shakuntala  Devi, who conquered the world and was also given the title of a “Human-Computer “at that time. The movie portrays the rise and fall in her life and how she portrayed herself as a mathematician alongside being a mother.

In this movie, Shakuntala Devi’s intellectuality has been projected in hilarious ways and how enthusiastically she has dealt with her life being an ambitious woman, who is ahead of her times. She even made maths look interesting and fun. The story mostly revolves around the mother and daughter relationship played by the charming Vidya Balan and Sanya Malhotra. Amit Sadh and Jishu Sengupta also did complete justice to the roles of being Shakuntala Devi’s son-in-law and husband respectively. ‘Tarabai’ performed by Sheeba Chaddha also empowered some of the scenes at its best.

The movie not only emphasized the positive aspects of her life but also dug deep into the personal as well as professional imbalances brought about by her actions. She puts up the picture of  “amazing” rather than being “normal”. Anu  Menon has done an amazing job with her direction and the dialogues are punched with numerical tricks and hacks which would make anybody’s life easier. The music delivered by Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Monali Thakur and Benny Dayal is catchy with a hint of sweetness in them. The humour and the comic timing of the movie leave the audience wanting for more.

To conclude in my opinion, this movie is a must-watch, with family members on a Sunday afternoon. Everybody should watch this to know more about this mathematical genius as well as enjoy the amazing work done by Vidya Balan.
