Kolkata 9th Jan. 2018: Magic, adventure & fantasy – perfect recipe for a children’s book. Author Vinita Srimal Garg tossed in all the right ingredients and whipped up quite a debut with her first book – Kabir and the Silver Spoon. On Tuesday afternoon, ‘Kabir and the Silver Spoon’ was launched in the presence of noted filmmaker Sudeshna Roy, magician Maneka Sarkar, film & television personality Mir and the author Vinita Srimal Garg at Saturday Club.
The story begins with Kabir’s visit to his mother’s native place in Rajasthan. A family heirloom handed over to him – an old silver spoon, suddenly starts speaking to him. This unfurls a series of extraordinary events. Kabir and his dog Hingoliya find themselves slipping down an ancient unused stepwell. It is here that they dicsover the forgotten kingdom of Jamwant. Strangely, everybody in Jamwant refers to Kabir as ‘Master’, he must get to the bottom of this.
While asking what made her pen down the story, the author said, “I was a new mother who has just given up on a job I loved. While I used to wait outside my son’s Montessori, out of habit I would carry my laptop with me. I had nothing else to do and yet I would just open the laptop and sit in front of it every day. In the corporate world we ae all creatures of habit. And that is how I started writing this story while waiting at a cafe for his school to get over. The idea of the story came to me while I was feeding my son. We all have these silver spoons with inscriptions on them and I wondere what if the spoon starts speaking to him, that really was the genesis of the idea.”
The book is priced at Rs. 195 and is targeted at the middle reader. It will soon be available in all leading bookstores, on Amazon and at Mango DC Book’s website.
