iPhone 8, 8 Plus: Innovation or Just Another Business Move?

-

Apple revealed its new phones this week – iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X along with a new model of Apple Watch (Series 3) with LTE support and a 4K Apple TV. As the company wrote in its customer communication copies a day before launch, “A monumental day for iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple TV“, it got the hopes of Apple fans higher than ever with curious anti-Apple eyebrows raising in skept.

On the big day, Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the new series of iPhone – 8. The phones come with a new glass design, improved (already popular) camera and a faster chip. The phones can also be charged wirelessly. With AR (Augmented Reality) being a crucial part of the changing tech industry, the iPhone 8 series also delivers AR experiences like never before. The Retina HD display now comes with True Tone that renders more beautiful visuals.

Breaking down the feature sets of the all new iPhone 8 series, the first thing that comes to mind is what exactly has changed?

With iPhone 7 already wooing its users with its superior 12 megapixel camera, the new iPhone also comes with a 12 megapixel camera, but with a larger and faster sensor. Also there is a new colour filter and optical image stabilisation for photos and videos. The all-new glass design of the handsets adds to the Apple glamour. As Apple says, it is ‘Precision-engineered to resist water and dust’. However, there is a condition associated with this claim – iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are splash, water and dust resistant, and were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529. Splash, water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Do not attempt to charge a wet iPhone; refer to the user guide for cleaning and drying instructions. Liquid damage is not covered under warranty. (source: apple.com)

Coming to the next feature of wireless charging, well it is definitely new to iOS but smartphones running Android and Windows have all been using the wireless charging technology for quite some time now. The annual upgrade of the chip – this year, A10 to the new A11 Bionic chip also keeps Apple fans happy.

iOS 11 has been in talks for some time now. With Apple’s earlier launch of the new iPad model, the company has been promoting the possibilities of the iOS 11. The newly done operating system is more advanced, secure and intuitive than any other smartphone software. Apple’s Siri can now find you music with the help of Apple Music, help typing texts and multi-task like never before.

So did Apple genuinely innovate anything that specific to have launched a whole new series of iPhones? As it appears, Apple did the minimum tweaks to the iPhone 7 family and offered an upgrade to its users so that the money can keep flowing in with annual sales grossing over 200 million.
