The Allahabad High Court ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure that the Indian national flag is hoisted at madrasas across the state on Independence Day and Republic Day, in response to a Public Interest Litigation filed by Arun Gaur, a resident of Aligarh.

India’s largest Islamic seminary, Darul Uloom Deoband issued a direction to all establishments related to Muslims, earlier on the eve of the Independence Day this year, to hoist the Indian flag and celebrate the day with pride and later Maulana Ashraf Usmani said that they wanted to wipe out all misconceptions about the integrity of Muslims and that madrasas do not take part in Indian Independence celebrations.
