Govt. Issues Notice to 3 News Channels regarding Yakub coverage

The Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued show-cause notice to three Indian popular news channel – ABP News, NDTV 24×7 and Aaj Tak on grounds of alleged disrespect to the Indian President and the judiciary by airing content against the interest of the Nation, opposing Yakub Memon’s hanging.

ABP News and Aaj Tak aired phone-in interviews of Chhota Shakeel in which he claimed that justice was not done with Yakub and the Nation’s cannot be believed in. An interview of Yakub Memon’s lawyer was aired by NDTV 24×7 who, for obvious reasons, supported Yakub, speaking against the Indian judiciary.

The Govt. issued notices are based on at least 3 sections:

Section 1(d): No programme should be carried which contains anything “obscene, defamatory, deliberate, false and suggestive innuendos and half-truths.

Section 1(e): no programme should be carried in the cable service which is “likely to encourage or incite violence or contains anything against maintenance of law and order or which promote anti-national attitudes.

Section 1(g): No programme should be carried content which “contains aspersions against the integrity of the President and Judiciary”.

The inter-ministerial committee including officials from the Defence, Home and External Affairs ministries shall review the reply to the show-cause notice by the news channels.
